Could it be? A current-gen, online-focused Star Wars Battlefront game rising from the ashes of Battlefront III? That seems to be the gist of a new, tasty rumor that just popped up today over on Kotaku.
According to unnamed sources, a multiplayer heavy version of LucasArts' Star Wars Battlefront franchise is in fact in development, but not at Crytek, or EA, or Rebellion. No, this game, dubbed Star Wars Battlefront Online, is apparently being built by none other than Slant Six Games -- the developers responsible for the recent SOCOM: U.S. Navy SEALs Confrontation on the PlayStation 3. "How could that work, SOCOM is a Sony-owned property," you ask? Well, yes, SOCOM is, but Slant Six are not. They're independent and can develop for what ever publisher they wish.
The details are scant, but it's said the title will be online-only, foregoing any single-player campaign like that which would have accompanied the ill-fated Battlefront III. It's apparently in pre-production stages right now, with a release slated for sometime in 2011. Most interesting, though, is that this source claims this is the game which caused all that hubbub last fall, when a casting director said he's just worked on a Battlefront project for LucasArts. Hmm.
Neither LucasArts or Slant Six have commented on the rumor. I wonder, might Battlefront Online utilize any of the concepts from the canned BFIII or BFIV projects? Those leaked mock-ups from late last year had quite a nice ring to them.
