Xbox Rewards program begins, giving out tons of Microsoft Points

E-mail Print PDF

Secretly sent out to randomly selected members last month in a survey, then confirmed by Microsoft as something they were testing, the new Xbox LIVE Rewards pilot program (which we broke news of) has officially been kicked off, complete with a snazzy website. The new program is awarding Microsoft Points aplenty to those participating.

"For the next six months, the Rewards Squad will hook you up with Microsoft Points just for doing the stuff Xbox LIVE members do all the time. You’ll score points not only for renewing your Gold subscriptions; you’ll get a reward on what you spend on the Xbox LIVE Marketplace. The best part is, the more you spend, the more you get, and for each month you stay on Gold, the higher your monthly reward up to 5% of your Marketplace spend."

"Also, every month, The Rewards Squad will send you an email with an update on the points you’ve earned and the cool stuff you can get," the site says. "This promotion lasts for six months and you can start spending the points you’ve accumulated after the first three months."In the fine print it's also stated that "The [Point] tokens will have an expiration date of June 30, 2010," and that a maximum of 40,000 MS Points can/will be given out to each participant during the duration of the program.

That sounds highly interesting. Getting paid to buy stuff online? Getting paid to keep your account at Gold level? Sounds a little like bribing, but hey. Free stuff is free stu-- sorry, "cool stuff". Cool stuff that everyone wants.

If you were selected (you would have had to complete the aforementioned survey), you should know between now, and November 6th. From previous information, roughly 60,000 people were given the chance to be included. No word on when (or even if) the program will be extended to other members, or if it will become a public treat for all Xbox LIVE subscribers after the initial six-month trial.

So microsoft are so desperate to make XBL look better value by giving out a couple pounds worth of points to people already being ripped off for some content? Hows about just reducing the price of live or content anyway? HA! fat fucking chance

Damn man, this ia a good decision, it will seriously urge people to subscribe to Gold, rather than Microsoft getting good deals like Sky TV, Netflix and always wanting people to subcribe to gold to enjoy those features.

Question?

If I renewed my Gold subscription before and everything, will I get reward points from back then??? If not, PSN is still a better overall deal...

I don´t get it!

You earn points, so that you can spend even more points? It´s like spending a lot of money for almost no discount. I just don´t get it?
