Dead Space 2 launching ... when it's done

October 2008 seems like such a long time ago, doesn't it? Dead Space crept up on us just before Halloween and cemented itself as one of the the best action shooter titles of this generation, not to mention being a now-classic franchise that will continue for years. The true sequel is on the way, currently being crafted by the Visceral Games team who just wrapped work on Dante's Inferno, and are in the middle of another unannounced project.

EA didn't give us an official release date for Dead Space 2 when it was announced last month, but naturally it was assumed that fall 2010 would see Issac Clarke return; two years is normally a fairly accurate time span between a game and its sequel. Unless you're Bethesda, or Valve. Perhaps not, though. Speaking with CVG, executive producer, Steve Papoutsis, says that the game will -- wait for it -- ship "when it's ready." Visions of Duke Nukem Forever, Half-Life 2: Episode 3, and every id Software game come to mind.

"We are focused 100% on quality and making a great sequel to the original Dead Space. [EA] is completely behind our team and Visceral Games. The game will ship when it is ready and meets with the teams and Visceral Games high quality standards."

"The entire team did a tremendous job on the original. We are fortunate to have the majority of those folks back on the sequel. I think the work that is happening now is fantastic and surpasses what we did on the original. ... We are not being held back at all on Dead Space 2 and hopefully people will see that when they get to see more of the game."

If we're lucky, maybe we'll be getting the living crap scared out of us sooner, rather than later.
