We only got a criminally brief jaunt through Rome during the very end of Assassin's Creed II, but Ubisoft are sending Ezio back to Italy's capital in the upcoming third Assassin's Creed, recently announced for release this fall.

Today was Ubisoft's Q3 financial results conference call, during which the company confirmed that the still-untitled new Assassin's Creed (which also is the first to include online multiplayer) would have Ezio "strike directly at the heart of the Templar Order" in Rome.

"There has been a lot of excitement around the next installment of the Assassin's Creed franchise," said CEO Yves Guilletmot. "What we can say today is that it marks the return of the now legendary Ezio, but this time he will strike directly at the heart of the Templars order in Rome. In addition to this full new adventure, players will also be able to challenge their friends in a very innovative assassination multiplayer."

Much to our disappointment, no further details were shared. But the time is coming for all to be revealed. When asked if the publisher is planning on making annual entries in the franchise, Guillemot replied, "We can't comment on that yet. We are going to come very often (to) that franchise."

So far we know that Assassin's Creed 2.5 will be a follow-up to ACII's story, and that gamers can anticipate a full retail product.
